EXTINCTIONS Choice

Name:   Carcharodon carcharias Tooth
Age:  Miocene
Formation:  Huarra Formation
Location:  Atacama Desert, Chile
Size:  Tooth is 1.8 inches long

This is a beautiful fossilized Great White Shark tooth. It is a Carcharodon carcharias tooth from the Miocene of Chile. This species is the same type as today's modern Great White Shark. This specimen is very well preserved and exhibits very fine detail. The root of the tooth is quite solid and robust. The tiny tip of the tooth is intact, and the sharp serrations are easily seen. The enamel has gorgeous, natural coloration, and the back side of the tooth still has some natural sandstone matrix embedded on it. This is an excellent example of a Great White Shark tooth fossil from South America.
