Name:
Carcharocles chubutensis Tooth
Age: Middle Miocene
Formation: Pungo River Formation
Location: Lee Creek Mine, Aurora, North Carolina
Size: Tooth is 2.8 inches long
Here is a very unusual shark tooth from North Carolina. This is a beautiful Carcharocles chubutensis (Carcharocles subauriculatus) tooth from the Pungo River Formation. Shark teeth from the famous Lee Creek Mine are becoming very difficult to obtain, since fossil collecting was curtailed a few years ago. This tooth was a rare find even when collecting was allowed. This tooth has a very wide, substantial root, and both small cusps are still intact. The serrations and tip are nicely intact and extremely sharp. The tooth has very interesting color - the tannish-brown enamel is quite special. This is a very fine example of this highly uncommon tooth.
